Karissa originally attended Westmont College in beautiful Santa Barbara, and began her B.S. in Psychology, then transferred to Montreat College, in the Appalachian hills of North Carolina, graduating Cum Laude with a B.S. in Music Therapy, and a double minor in Psychology and Music Business. She obtained her M.A. in Clinical Counseling from Concordia University Irvine, through Dr. Townsend’s Institute for Leadership and Counseling. She also has training and experience in Equine Therapy, and is a Certified Equine-Assisted Practitioner through EAGALA. She is now pursuing her doctorate, and PhD in Integrative Psychiatric Medicine, in hopes to better serve those who suffer with chronic illness, auto-immune issues, and the gap between our physical and mental health that is often not adequately addressed, misdiagnosed, or overlooked entirely in traditional Western Medicine practices. As a Licensed Associate Counselor in California and Arizona, awaiting license to transfer to Georgia, and practicing as an associate, she is expertised in the care she provides to her clients.
Karissa joins the Maverick team with a passion to engage clients in individual and couples work. With her training in the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and her trauma informed approach, she is equipped to assist individuals and couples address a variety of challenges and specific diagnoses.
If you are wanting to break long-term or generational cycles, engage a deeper level of intimacy with another, and unearth your most authentic, courageous self, you've come to the right place. Unconditional love, strengthening self compassion, and finding hope that transforms and ignites dreams into realities through personal growth is all possible. Karissa believes it is a privilege and joy to get to champion you into all that you were created to be, and to walk in all of your gifts and potential.
Karissa is trained to provide faith based services for those who prefer or request that perspective. With a personal experience in theological understandings and the Pastoral Care and Counseling Certificate she received from Fuller Theological Seminary, Karissa works closely with local churches, pastors, and those in ministry to eradicate the experience of shame, church related pain, and welcomes all questions of faith.
Faith-Based Values
Karissa has a therapy dog and faithful sidekick, named Miss Sparrow. She is 6lbs of pure Shih Tzu love, and has the gift of instantaneously melting hearts. In her free time, she loves to paddle-board, dance, go on medical mission trips, and hike in wide open spaces. She especially likes to write and create music that stirs wonder about life, love & spirituality.
