Family Counseling FAQ
What is Family Counseling?
Family therapy includes working within the family system, which could include parents, children, partners, grandparents, and siblings, to help everyone in the family understand and communicate effectively with one another.
How does Family Counseling work?
Family therapy requires multiple sessions with individuals in the system and sessions in which all members are present. Psychotherapy within the family system can improve interactions and communication between family members by supporting each person’s strengths and empowering them to process their needs in healthy ways. The therapist may encourage each member of the family to discuss their experiences, hopes, and challenges with clarifying their beliefs, values, needs, and assumptions. Therapists will establish boundaries and norms to interrupt dysfunctional patterns and behaviors, such as blaming each other, understanding how their words and behaviors impact others, and stop emotionally abusive language.
When is Family Counseling needed?
Family therapy can be helpful when families are feeling unsure of how to resolve conflict and move forward in their relationships. Feelings such as sadness or anger can emerge if dysfunctional family patterns dominate interactions. Changes in the family system like physical illness, mental health or substance abuse issues, moving, divorce, ageing, trauma, grief and loss, and new children can bring about new challenges and family therapy can be helpful.

How much does Family Counseling cost?
Cost is dependent on your therapist’s experience, session length, and whether you are in need of a sliding scale or not. Maverick Marriage Therapy does not accept insurance, but your therapist can provide a Superbill to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement. Please contact your insurance company to discuss this possibility further.
How long does the Family Counseling process take?
Family therapy is a complex and highly specialized process. It could lask only a few sessions, or it may take several more for some families.
