While pursuing his master degree in counseling from the University of Pennsylvania, Onteria served as a practicum and intern student at a high school and elementary school. This would begin his work with underserved populations and youth experiencing a myriad of behavioral and academic challenges. Upon graduating in 2020, Onteria began working with teenage males who had been incarcerated due to substance and drug use and other criminal behaviors. In this time, Onteria developed a passion for leading group counseling sessions.
Onteria also has nearly four years of experience working virtually with a community mental health agency providing therapy for individuals with ADHD, mood and personality disorders and marital and family problems. Currently, Onteria is a second year doctoral student at the University of Georgia’s counseling education and supervision program. Onteria aspires to use his degree to train and supervise future clinicians while also continuing to provide mental health services for individuals and families.
As an avid wrestling fan, Onteria believes that we all have battles in life that we must endure and overcome but no battle is completely conquered alone. Onteria views his therapeutic role comparable to a tag team in wrestling. The best teams are forged by having a common goal and a collaborative relationship built on respect, grace and unconditional positive regard.
Orteria offers counseling with a faith-based, biblical approach, allowing each client to determine the extent to which spiritual matters are incorporated into their sessions. He empowers clients to choose how much their faith is integrated into their personal growth and healing, without imposing his own spiritual beliefs. His Christian counseling services—whether for couples, families, or individuals—utilize biblical principles to interpret, understand, and address life’s challenges. For those who choose this approach, his mission is to embody the love, compassion, and honesty of Christ while supporting clients in their relationship with God. He values the insights gained from psychological and social research, always aligning them with the timeless wisdom of scripture.
Faith-Based Values
Onteria is a proud father of a rambunctious son and triplet daughters. In his very limited free time, Onteria enjoys going to the gym, dancing off-beat and signing off-key to praise and worship music, watching WWE and rewatching his favorite sitcoms (How I Met your Mother and This is Us).
