Valerie Diaz

Valerie works with couples who love each other but keep getting stuck in the same arguments, hurt feelings, distance, or misunderstandings. She specializes in high-conflict, multicultural and intercultural, and LGBTQ+ couples, as well as men with undiagnosed or late-identified ADHD.
Her style is warm, collaborative, and straight-forward. She won't just sit back and listen. She'll help you understand what's going wrong and work with you to change it.

Experience

Valerie primarily uses Relational Life Therapy (RLT), a practical and active approach to couples therapy. Rather than deciding who's right or wrong, she helps couples see the pattern they are stuck in, and understand what each person is doing to keep it going. You'll look at where those reactions come from, take responsibility for your part, and learn different ways to communicate and respond to each other. Valerie is compassionate, but she's also direct. She'll point out patterns you may not recognize, and help you practice doing things differently—not just talk about the problem. The goal is simple: less blame and defensiveness, more honesty, accountability, and connection.

Valerie is skilled in working with high-conflict couples, intercultural couples, and couples from the LGBT community. She also works with couples and individuals affected by life transitions, including post-partum women, those affected by immigration, and career/life-calling turning points.

Hands in the Soil

Valerie provides therapy in English and Spanish and brings more than 20 years of international experience in training, education, public health and program leadership. She understands how culture, immigration, family expectations, gender roles, and identity can shape relationships.

Personal

Valerie is a wife and mom of three. When she's not working, you'll probably find her watching old sitcoms with her husband, listening to a rom-com audiobook on a long walk, or planning the family's next trip.
